What is JPSC?
JPSC (Jharkhand Public Service Commission) runs the state civil services exam. If you clear it, you can become officers like Deputy Collector, DSP, BDO and other important posts in Jharkhand.
Why is it important?
These jobs let you work for the people—solving local problems, running government schemes, and improving services in your district.
How the exam works?
Prelims (first stage)
Objective questions (MCQs).
It’s a screening test to shortlist candidates for Mains.
You study common subjects: History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Science, Current Affairs, and Jharkhand-specific topics.
Mains (second stage)
Descriptive (long answers).
Tests your understanding and writing—how clearly you explain ideas.
Subjects cover society, constitution & governance, economy, science & environment, and one language & literature paper.
There’s also a basic language paper (Hindi & English) which is qualifying.
Interview (final stage)
A face-to-face discussion about your background, awareness, and problem-solving.
Checks confidence, honesty, communication, and your understanding of Jharkhand.

Eligibility Overview
Nationality: Must be an Indian citizen.
Educational Qualification (Minimum): Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from a university recognized by UGC. Degrees recognized as equivalent by competent authorities (including recognized foreign degrees) are accepted.
Number of Attempts: No cap on attempts—you can apply as many times as you remain within the prescribed age limits.
Age Limits (Category-wise)
Minimum age: 21 years (as on the reference date announced in the notification).
Maximum age (upper-age limit):
UR / EWS: 35 years
EBC-I / BC-II (Jharkhand): 37 years
Women (UR / EBC-I / BC-II): 38 years
SC / ST (Jharkhand): 40 years
Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD): +10 years relaxation over category limit
Ex-Servicemen: +5 years relaxation over category limit
State Government employees (≥3 years regular service): +5 years
Relaxations are cumulative where applicable (within the framework notified for that cycle).
Important: The cut-off/reference dates for calculating minimum and maximum age are specified in each advertisement (they can differ between exams). Always check the current notification for the exact dates.
Reservation & Domicile Essentials
Reservation benefits (SC/ST, EBC-I, BC-II, EWS, PwBD, Women, Ex-Servicemen, Sportspersons, etc.) are available only to permanent residents of Jharkhand, subject to valid certificates issued by competent authorities as per State rules.
Category, EWS, PwBD, Domicile/Local Resident, and other certificates must be in the prescribed format and within validity as on the dates mentioned in the notification.
Horizontal reservations (e.g., Women, PwBD, Ex-Servicemen, Sportspersons) are applied within vertical categories as per State policy.
Exam Pattern Rules
Prelims (Screening)
Two objective papers, 200 marks each (2 hours each).
No negative marking. Multiple responses to a question are treated as wrong; unattempted questions carry no penalty.
Prelims marks are not counted in the final merit; they only shortlist for Mains. (As per the exam scheme.)
Mains (Written)
Six descriptive papers, total 1050 marks (as per the current scheme).
Minimum qualifying aggregate (overall Mains):
UR / EWS: 40%
EBC-I: 34%
BC-II: 36.5%
SC / ST / Women: 32%
Primitive Tribal Group (PTG): 30%
PwBD: as per their parent category; overall relaxation policy applies.
No separate paper-wise minimum unless specifically stated; the aggregate across Mains papers is what matters.
Interview / Personality Test
Interview: 100 marks; conducted for candidates qualified in Mains.
Service Allocation & Merit Rules
Final merit = Mains (aggregate) + Interview.
Reserved-category candidates who do not take any relaxation (age/attempt/fee/qualifying marks, etc.) and score within UR merit are treated as UR for allotting higher preferences, without affecting their category rights for lower preferences. This ensures first consideration for top choices under UR, then adjustment to reserved seats for subsequent choices if needed.
Tie-breaking / category-wise lists and provisional selection are prepared as per rules notified for that cycle.
Physical Standards
Required only for posts like Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) & other notified uniformed roles. Standards include height, chest (with expansion) & eyesight norms, varying by gender and category as per State rules. Medical fitness is verified by a Civil Surgeon/Medical Board. (Non-uniformed posts do not require these standards.)
